Ingrid Calame's Traces of the Motor Speedway opened last Thursday night at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA). The tables were resplendent in black and white checks. One could also make their very own work of art using ink-pads and toy cars with stamp wheels on multicolored foam. Calame's work is on the third floor in the contemporary art wing. A shock of red and pink greets the viewer at the exhibit entrance. Once the shock of floor to ceiling red wears off the hot pink splotches make more sense and a pattern emerges. Three walls have semi-circle track marks that create a donut shape when pieced together. The rest of the exhibit consists of 11 pieces of artwork that are a marriage of both intricate planning and happenstance resulting in one cohesive piece. Calame and her crew trace stains on surfaces in this instance the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The traces are transfered onto mylar using colored pencil. The paintings which are made from the tracings as well are enamel on aluminum. The craftsmanship is impeccable on these paintings, every edge is so neatly done that it is nearly impossible to tell which color was applied first. Long story short; these are the prettiest stains I have ever seen.
