It is good to know that when there is an important political issue, we have the support of people who can make a big difference. Celebrities, like Steven Spielberg and Brad Pitt, have donated money to help fight Proposition 8, which would ban gay marriage in the state of California. I think that any time our government tries to promote discrimination and segregation with laws like this one, we need to put up a fight.
What are your thoughts?
I think celebrity support can be good but often backfires and ends up doing more harm than good.
Celebrities are generally perceived more as the richest & hottest people in the world rather than the most intelligent.
Their motives are also put into question. Are they wholeheartedly behind the cause or do they just want their name back in the media to help promote that upcoming movie or album?
That said, I can't criticize Steven Spielberg and Brad Pitt for donating money to help fight Proposition 8. If I had the money I'd feel better using it for a positive cause than buying yet another house.
I see what you mean, but the here is how I look at it: No matter what their motives are, that money is helpful to that cause, right?
I see what you mean, but the here is how I look at it: No ...
Yes, I agree with you there. In this case, I doubt there is any negative impact or backfiring that will occur. The points I made are mainly applicable when celebrities endorse a politician.
Yes, that's why I try not to pay attention to who supports a politician, but what the politician supports. I just wish all voters would think more in that direction. I cringe to think that someone would vote someone into any office based on what celebrities are saying or doing.
