Economic crisis = vampires?
Vampires are en vogue again in television and movies. Not that they are ever too far off the pop cultural radar, but after reading an interview with George Romero concerning the popularity of zombie movies during times of social unrest, I got to thinking about the vampire revival (no pun intended). I think that the resurgence in vampire stories on television and in film might be related to the economic crisis that began brewing last year and has the U.S. on the brink of economic collapse. It's a pretty simple metaphor considering how many people think they are prey for unethical lenders, irresponsible banks and brokers, etc. Whatcha think?
Those greedy bastiches sucked the lifeblood right out of the world economy. Shall we proceed to impale them with wooden stakes?

I'm all for it. I do wonder when white collar workers will be arrested en masse for this debacle. I mean, if you rob someone on the street it's a felony, but if you suck billions out of the economy so that you can gold-plate your private jet while people lose their houses it's just the risks of a free market? I think the people responsible for creating these insane financial instruments and those who played with all the fake money should be prosecuted.
Analysts say "it's complicated". It's difficult to say if there's any provable fraud involved because the regulation of mortgage lending was so lax that apparently lenders could give expensive loans to people who couldn't afford them without breaking the law. It looks like it's more a case of runaway bad judgement than fraud. A high-risk crap shoot that shot the economy right down the crapper.

Hmmm. There was a Panic of 1873...Bram Stoker's "Dracula" was published in 1897. Now, global communication was a little slower then, so I'm not stretching too much.

Yeah, the laws are lax. I wish summary execution didn't have such a chilling effect on democracy and the rule of law.
