Life On Mars
This is a remake of a British show that premiers tonight on ABC. I'm a big fan of the British version, and I have high hopes for the remake. It stars Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli, and Gretchen Mol, among others. I suspect you should probably watch it. Here's the trailer:

Yeah, but did you hear about AbFab? They're putting it in L.A., with Patsy and Edina -- but NOT with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley. Bad idea!
Little Britain in America looks pretty funny, though.

I didn't hear about that. Ugh. I usually don't get the point of these remakes. I mean, we speak the same friggin' language as these folks. Their shows are available to us on DVD and the internets. They don't have the same level of network censorship that we do, so they tend to push the envelope and produce a better product. Their seasons don't last as long as ours, so the ideas don't get played out as quickly. Ah well, I guess it could be worse. If we're going to rip someone off, we might as well rip off the best.

In general, remakes are moving the medium forward -- unless something really new can be given to the updated version. Just wait 'til the American version of "The Host" comes out. Or "Battle Royale." Or the updated version of "Rosemary's Baby." Or they take your most-loved cartoon from childhood and put it on the big-screen with CGI. While I would love to see a herd of CGI My Little Ponies, I have a bad feeling it wouldn't turn out too well.
Just...do something we haven't seen before. And Did they really need to remake "The Omen"? REALLY?

Remakes are a pet peeve of mine. I wish Hollywood would concentrate on remaking crap in order to atone for their sins and leave the good stuff alone. Battlefield Earth, Waterworld, Weekend at Bernie's II. These are the mistakes that need to be corrected.
Tim Burton is one of the primary offenders in this regard. He's a great filmmaker, but I really wish he'd kept his paws off Willy Wonka and Planet of the Apes.
If anyone ever dares to touch Casablance or Citizen Kane, it's the last straw. I will wage a mighty war.
Jenny Elig : RE: Life On Mars More..
Amen. Tim Burton ruined himself and several good movies with those remakes.
And...shhhh...they'll get ideas of what to remake. They might start thinking about "Mannequin" or something...
Oh snap, a remake of "Mannequin" would be awesome! Great idea, Jenny.

Ha! You know, they made a sequel to Mannequin. It was called Mannequin: On the Move. Actually, I hope you didn't know that. I wish I didn't.
Seriously though, when did Tim Burton become a hack? He was really good at one point. What the f--- happened to him?
Drinky_McGee : RE: Life On Mars More..
I think he's always been, and still is, amazing visually. It's the scripts he uses that need help. I really don't think he cares a great deal about the story, and it shows. He just wants a frame around which to hang striking images. The guy needs to find a decent writer who can come up with an original screenplay so that he can stop raping my childhood and do something good again.

Oh my. I didn't know that about Mannequin. Was Hollywood in the sequel?
I agree about Tim Burton. His stuff is pretty. Maybe I should turn the sound down.

The great Meschack Taylor did indeed reprise his Hollywood role. Incredibly, he was snubbed by Oscar. Even more incredibly, the film's theme song received an Oscar nomination. I'm sure you'll remember this little ditty:

Oh damn. I got bad info from Wikipedia. If you can believe that. This song was clearly the theme of the original. Egg on my face. But I'm certainly not going to edit that, because it's cheesily awesome. The way Meshack meets Starship at the end. Priceless.

I was not disappointed by Life On Mars. It was somewhat more frenetic than the British version, especially at the beginning, and could have benefited from taking its time a bit more, but that's a small criticism. The reconstruction of New York City in 1973 was delicious, and the reveal of the Twin Towers was powerful stuff. I wonder if that bothered anyone? I didn't think there was much of a choice. If you're going to set a show in New York in 1973, it's going to be impossible to avoid those things.
The cast was as good as I thought they'd be. I can already tell that Havery Keitel is going to be my favorite part of this show. His role is real scenery-chewing material. Michael Imperioli was slimy and wonderful. Love the 'stache.
Aside from Harvey Keitel, the best thing about this show may end up being the music. I've been singing the Stones' "Out Of Time" all morning.
Did anyone else check out the show?
