"All the Way" isn't as brash as the Chicago Bears' "Super Bowl Shuffle" of 1985, but Eddie Vedder's new tribute to the Chicago Cubs predicts a world championship just the same.

"Someday we'll go all the way," Vedder sings.

Why not this year? The team clinched the NL Central title Saturday, and it's the best Cubs squad in this reporter's 39 years of fandom.

Vedder, who grew up in the Chicago suburb of Evanston before achieving worldwide fame as Pearl Jam's vocalist, recorded "All the Way" during an August appearance at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre.

Audience members either were a quick study regarding the song's chorus or they were sufficiently coached before tape rolled.

I challenge any Cubs fan to resist weepiness when Vedder sings, "United we stand and united we'll fall ... down to our knees the day we win it all."

The song is available for purchase (99 cents) at Pearl Jam's Web site.

"All the Way" also can be heard various places on YouTube, including here:
