I'm looking for some Alton Brown fans out there. He hosts the "Good Eats" show on Food Network. As I don't have cable, I've been renting his DVDs from the library.
His is the only cooking show I've ever liked - instead of just a straight stand-behind-the-counter show, he goes into the science of food, and tells you how to shop for the right ingredients. Plus his quirky act is so cheesy it's endearing. I've been very excited about cooking this week mainly because of his show.
Has anyone read or purchased his books? Also what are your favorite episodes? Mine are the spice, salt and eggplant ones, so far. (Veggie-friendly is better for me...)
Alton Brown is incredible. Good Eats was the perfect show for the culinary inclined and overly analytical lol. His mixture of education, sharp wit, and sarcastic nature blended perfectly with his effortless cooking abilities. As a former manager of The Old Spaghetti Factory, moy old GM was a HUGE Alton Brown fan, with an autographed pic of him in the office. Truly a great show. I actually caught an episode last night on Food Network, where the subject was bananas, plantains and he covered the makings of banana ice cream, fried plaintains, and the pry-technic goodness that is Bananas Foster. Gotta love it.
Alton Brown ... woot!
I've seen almost all the episodes at this point and have my upstairs Tivo set to have a constantly revolving 10 episodes so I can just keep watching them whenever I feel like it.
Favorite episodes (this list could be much longer because I have yet to find one I don't like): Three Chips for Sister Marsha, Fry Hard 2: The Chicken, Squid Pro Quo,Casserole Over, Give Peas a Chance and Your Pad or Mine (Thai).
And yes, I've mentioned this earlier, but I'm a huge dork.
Alton Brown is great; very fun to watch. He did a cooking demonstration at the Clark Appliance store in Greenwood a couple years ago; he was shilling for an appliance maker -- GE Trivection ovens, I think -- but was amusing nonetheless. You'd think I'd have one of his books here among my stacks of cookbooks, but I guess I don't.
I am a A.B. guy also. Love the show; it is in the number 1 season pass on my TIVO. I have made a lot of his food from the show and my kids love it. A couple of years ago, I got a family picture take with him at Castleton Mall. I was in line for two and a half hours and when we got up to him he was very nice. Asked questions to the kids and ask what I had made. Had a laugh that I can't make the pan fried chicken without burning it. AND EVEN gave me tips that helped me stop burning it. He was so cool.
Favorite ESP: Scrap Iron Chef.
I too am an Alton fan. I don't see how you can love to cook and not get into his show. I end up learning so many things that most other cooking shows would never address ... like how the very first pretzels were made, or what kind of spatula you should use for omelettes.
Plus I've really enjoyed both seasons of Feasting on Asphalt. You really get a sense of the different cultures in regards to food all over the country. And the crew was quite entertaining.
Alton can do no wrong!
My baby is 9 months old and ever since she was old enough to be in her bouncer seat she has been glued to the TV when Good Eats comes on. I don't know if its the way Alton Brown talks to the camera, or the food, but she watches that show like most kids watch cartoons.
i just adore Alton. Favorite Good Eats episodes include: In the Bulb of the Night (garlic) Choux Shine and Toast Modern
I'm going to go look for that garlic episode this weekend! That sounds great. I'll also check out Feasting. Good to meet many other fans.
I first discovered I could expand my cooking repotoire after watching Rachel Ray, but it didn't take long for Alton Brown to become an inspiration. I too appreciate his scientific approach to teaching how to creatively prepare foods. I don't have a favorite episode, but my most often repeated recipe is for French toast. But I've been able to one up him with the wonderful Vanilla Egg Bread from Breadsmith on Broad Ripple Ave. Thanks to Alton I'm always checking out kitchen utensils and supplies in a variety of stores.
I've never met anyone who was on the fence with Alton...you either love his shows or hate them...Me? I love 'em...Anyone catch Feasting on Asphalt?
The show gives a totally different perspective on Alton. Good Eats puts a focus on the science, while Feasting on Asphalt literally takes you on an adventure of the foods that inspire this culanary expert we've all grown to love...or hate.
I love Alton Brown. I really love that he explains the science behind cooking. I love that he teaches technique rather than specific recipes (like a less annoying Rachel Ray). I love that he's always pulling a MacGuyver and finding multiple uses for a single kitchen item. (Sorry other TV chefs, but I just can't afford all those fancy kitchen doodads.) My favorite episode was probably the one where he tested various food myths.
I got hooked with the cookie episode. He explained how you go about getting the thick cookies, chewy cookies and crispy cookies and I have not stopped watching since!
I love watching Alton Brown also. He puts so much fun into whatever he is doing. He not only shows you how to make things but the what, where, and how about it all. He seems so excited about everything he is doing. I have not read any of his books, but if they are half as exciting as his show I know I would enjoy them
