Yeah, they're completely pointless. I can't detect any kind of overt or even implied sales message. Which, y'know, is kinda the whole reason behind advertising.

And yet, I just love 'em.

I think this ad campaign is a response to the Mac ads that have a sort of elitist vibe. In these Microsoft ads you have a couple of rich guys showing that they're not so different from a more middle class / average family. They're trying to get the point across that Windows is for everyone, and it may have some flaws, but what doesn't? Perhaps the idea is that people will relate more to these average (though pretty weird to ad humor) folks than they will to the smart-ass Mac guy.

The strange factor has also resulted in more people talking about and watching these ads, so I'd say that this ad campaign has been successful.

All that said, I prefer the Mac OS so much more than Windows. And I may have smirked a couple of times at these ads, but have laughed out loud at some of the Mac ads.

I agree, Ben, that they're a response to the too-cool-for-school Mac ads. But the Mac ads at least actually talk about features of their computers, or weaknesses of their competitors.

I think the reason I like these PC ads is that they're about nothing, just like Seinfeld's show.

Btw Nina, the second ad is a longer Web-only version; nobody would put a four-plus minute commercial on TV.

I like the ads...I think they go a long way toward making PC less like a fuddy-duddy grandpa (but still no where near Mac in coolness).

And I will say this: The Justin Long ads make me feel bad for buying my PC...but these ads don't make me feel any better for owning it.
