Movie Remakes

When Hollywood does a remake, I love to watch both (or all) versions and compare. I recently watched "The Philadelphia Story"(1940) and "High Society"(1956) to compare them to each other. I enjoyed both and for once I couldn't pick a favorite between them. I think "A Philadelphia Story" had more of my favorite actors, but the delivery of both movies was analogous.

Have you ever watched a remake and not been able to decide which was better? Tell me about it.

This discussion starts and ends with "Dawn of the Dead." Romero's original is unparalleled, but Zack Snyder made some kind of crackerjack of a movie that distinguished itself from the original well, with its own style, a revamping of the zombie genre (okay, it followed Danny Boyle's lead with "28 Days Later," but you get my point).

Another is "The Fly." The original is horror classic, but the Cronenberg remake with Jeff Goldblum is pretty creepy too.

High Society doesn't even come close to Philadelphia story! I mean seriously you have Jimmy Stewart game over right there!!

I agree, but I am also a huge Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra! Although, if I could go back in time and marry Jimmy Stewart, I would in a heart beat!

I am really not a remake fan...on the one hand, you can't help but make comparisons...for example the Parent Trap with Haley Mills and then Lohan's version, essentially the same story and most wouldn't quibble but Haley's version was hands down better and I think it is all too easy to pick remakes apart for what they did differently and didn't do. I thought it was a gigantic mistake to remake the Planet of the Apes...that movie was perfect as it was...why re-invent the wheel? Trust me, someday somone will be compelled to remake Gone with the Wind or Titanic and it will be a second rate imitation of another man's genius.

The most common remakes nowadays are taking foreign films and remaking them with American casts. Because we just hate to read subtitles...

i am waiting for the remake of the women to come out this fall. i really like the original, so it will be interesting to see a modern take on the 65plus year old movie. to any that are interested in seeing the new one though, see the old one first!
