The Future of Kevin Smith
Kevin Smith recently pondered his future as a film director. A Political horror film? Sci fi superhero invention starring Seth Rogen?? www.comicmix.com/news/2008/09/08...

Though I'm a big fan of comics whether independant, superhero, manga, or other foreign genres--I just cannot, for the life of me, stand Kevin Smith or his work.
I am on the other end of that opinion in that I love Kevin Smith's body of work. I think he gets a lot of crap for puttin together the movie HE wants to see. If more directors stood up to the big studios and said " Hey if you let me put together the movie MY way people will come and see it." I think we would have much better cinema fair. As opposed to seeing a movie like "norbit" or "Dave" or Daddy day care 2. And maybe just maybe we could stop remaking all the old movies and come up with some new ideas.

Haha--I don't mind remakes so much, but if nothing else he's helped with the independent film culture!
I've enjoyed many of his movies, but his comic book work is extremely overrated.

He's not a great filmmaker by any means, and he frequently falls into that fanboy trap of doing ignorant kinds of things in his films, but man does he make some memorable movies with great dialog.
And he can tell a story and hold a crowd like nobody's business. If you're reading this and haven't yet seen either "An Evening With Kevin Smith" or "An Evening With Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder," do it now. Each is 3 hours of Smith just standing there talking, and they're absolutely mesmerizing, hilarious, and if you're a fan of his movies, film in general or just pop culture, you'll be rapt.
I think he's the inverse of someone like M. Night Shamalamading-dong, who's directing skills far out-pace his writing skills to the point he should be directing other people's scripts.
Kevin Smith is a writer first and foremost. On his own, he's a "drop the camera here, point it and leave it" kind of director who would be better served having someone else -- M. Night? -- shoot his scripts. That's why I tend to think the only time the visuals of a Kevin Smith project matched the dialogue was with the six-episode "Clerks: The Animated Series."
Oh, and yes, the "Evening" documentaries are fantastic.
Looking forward to Evening Harder. The first was great.

He at least experimented a little in "Clerks II," even if some of the shots seemed gratuitous and gimmicky (the "ABC" sequence was just silly, but it was a good one), and there was one scene where the camera just panned around and around two lovers kissing that had me going "yep, he's trying to shut up the critics."
