A sub of some substance

A sub shop with its own signature condiment? Now, that's truly thinking outside the bun. Lenny's Sub Shop in Carmel is one of those types of places, proudly serving up its own Hot Pepper Relish made with cherry peppers.

You can even grab an 8-ounce jar to take home. The pepper relish goes with almost anything: atop scrambled eggs, or mixed with cream cheese to make a tasty dip.

Of course, you can also get it on any of the sandwich shop's dozen-plus hot or cold sandwiches. Meats and cheeses are sliced fresh to order, whether you want the Italian club, turkey or roast beef. And if you get a meatball, a tuna salad or a chicken salad sandwich, those are made fresh, too.

These aren't celebutante-sized sandwiches, either. The full-size (around $10) measures 15 inches and tips the scale at one pound. Half-size ($5-$6) is available, too. The Philly cheesesteak is the best-selling hot sub. "A lot of people come in and tell us this Philly cheesesteak is the closest thing to the East Coast they've ever had," says Dick Storms, operating partner at the Carmel location.

If you're unsure of the difference between capicola and prosciutto, a Lenny's staffer will gladly enlighten you. Lenny's plans to open a few more shops in the coming months, including one at 7534 N. Shadeland Ave. In the meantime, they'll deliver to just about anywhere near their three area locations, but it's worth the trek for the Hot Pepper Relish alone.

AFTER READING THIS ARTICLE, I DECIDED TO TREAT MY 19 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO LUNCH AT LENNY'S TODAY. MY DAUGHTER LOVES SUBWAY! HER FAVORITE IS A PLAIN OLD HAM AND CHEESE SANDWICH. SO, SHE ORDER THE SAME TYPE OF MENU AT LENNY'S. I AM A TRY SOME THING NEW KIND OF GUY. SO, I ORDERED THE NINE INCH PHILLY STEAK SPECIAL WITH ALL THE GARBAGE- INCLUDING THE HOT PEPPER RELISH.

WE BOTH GOT THE VALUE MEAL DEAL. WHICH INCLUDED DRINKS, AND CHIPS OR A BIG FAT COOKIE. MY ICE TEA WAS A VERY THIRST QUENCHING HOME BREW. HOWEVER, MY DAUGHTERS FRESH SQEEZED LEMONADE WAS SO SOUR IT TOOK YOUR BREATH AWAY, IN A BAD WAY. THE COOKIES WERE FRESH, LIKE THE OLD NEIGHBOR LADY USED TO MAKE. BUT THOSE FAMOUS LENNY'S SANDWICHS WERE JUST KIND OF HO-HUM. THE PEPPER RELISH DID HAVE A NICE LITTLE KICK. BUT...... I THINK MY DAUGHTER IS FINALLY FIGURING MONEY DOES NOT GROW ON TREES WHEN SHE SAID, "DAD, LENNY'S SEEMS TO BE AN OVERPRICED SUBWAY IMITATION." SMART GIRL!!!!!
