Meet The Band: State
There is risk attached to striking out, doing your own thing, being unique. State chose that path several years ago and "whether or not (it) is working for us, I don't know," said front man David Barajas, "It definitely feels right."
He and his bandmates deliver a new album, "You Shouldn't Stare," this month, and like earlier offerings from State, it confounds "file under" classifications. The band mixes austere choral arrangements, western Americana, and chunks of chamber music with Queens of the Stone Age-style bombast, Faith No More's cheekiness and the raw urgency of punk.
The album was recorded by Mike Bridavsky, a Nashville, Ind.-based engineer who knew when to lend a hand and when to lay off. "He surprisingly has a great ear for pop music, and actually helped restructure a couple songs that were leaning towards that pop sensibility," said Barajas. "(But) he knows when we're locked into an idea, and he produces it."
The album is fresh, quirky, fun, and may well get State higher-profile shows around the region.
