Music videos based on rock 'n' roll dreams, young love and race relations advanced to the finals of the second Indy.com "Music Video Throwdown" contest.
Indy.com users chose Jeff Byrd & the Wingmen, the Holiday and the Luckies from a field of 14 submissions. The three bands will perform live Sept. 6 at Moon Dog Tavern, with hopes of winning the competition's grand prize.
The highest tally of audience votes will bring a windfall of $1,000, airplay on Indy's Music Channel, a spotlight appearance on WRZX-FM (103.3) and recording time at The Hit Dept.
The finalists:
Jeff Byrd & the Wingmen
Current recording: "Stereoville."
Winning video: "Once Upon a Saturday Night."
Directed by Jade Birch, the clip that accompanies "Once Upon a Saturday Night" shows a feisty rock band taking a swing for the fences. "We tried to express the story," Jeff Byrd says. "We felt like it was a very visual song."
Byrd and the Wingmen -- drummer Steve Johnson and bass player Russell Birch -- portray the musicians, while the Melody Inn and cartoon artist/local music promoter Wayne Bertsch make memorable cameos. Byrd says a weekend's worth of filming went into the five-minute video, which reminded him of the three days he spent as an extra on the Indianapolis set of "Going All the Way."
"You can see my back for two seconds," he says of the 1997 film that features Ben Affleck in a pre-stardom role.
The Holiday
Current recording: "Innocence" EP.
Winning video: "Things I Should Have Said in Person."
Directed by Adam Shewmaker, the clip that accompanies "Things I Should Have Said in Person" doesn't feature any members of the Holiday in acting roles. Instead, vocalist Derrick Royer and band mates Ben Scott and Josh Kincheloe perform the song amid scenes of unpredictable adolescent love. Following a stint as aggressive rock act Red Letter Reason, Royer and Co. adopted a pop-rock sound and a new band name. "We try to write songs that by the end, hopefully, you can sing the chorus," he says. "I don't hear that as often as I'd like to when I go to shows around town."
The Luckies
Current recording: "The Best of What's New."
Winning video: "Black & White Thing."
Co-directed by David Brown and David Nay, the clip that accompanies "Black & White Thing" includes 1960s documentary footage of the civil rights movement. Luckies vocalist Bobbie K. Owens said Black History Month inspired the song's lyrics. "It was just one of those things that was on my mind," says Owens, a full-time visual artist and part-time elementary school teacher. Owens, 55, started writing songs just five years ago. "I always told people, 'I wish I could paint paintings as cool as the music I listen to,'." says the leader of the Columbus, Ind.-based Luckies.
