8:04 AM update

Winter weather across the nation was affecting flights to and from Indianapolis International Airport this morning.

Nearly 15 of today’s nearly 200 planned arrivals had been canceled — most were from Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth — while 12 were delayed and more than 70 were listed as “contact airline,” according to the airport’s Web site about 8 a.m.

Eleven of 370 departing flights were canceled — most were to Atlanta — while more than 60 were listed as “contact airlline.”

Winter storm warnings spanned the Gulf Coast states early today as a snowstorm crawled east out of Texas, where it left the Dallas area with more than a foot of snow, nearly 200 traffic accidents and hundreds of canceled flights. The snowfall made this the snowiest winter in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 32 seasons.

Snow, ice and sleet closed parts of Interstate 49 in central Louisiana early today.

Predictions of an inch of snow was enough to close schools in the Florida Panhandle, while classes also were canceled in parts of Alabama, where up to 5 inches of snow could fall.

Nearly 1,100 flights were canceled systemwide by Fort Worth, Texas-based American Airlines and American Eagle airlines today — about 30 percent of American’s daily flight schedule, said American spokesman Steve Schlachter. Of those, 305 were flights from Dallas-Fort Worth.

In Atlanta, Delta Air Lines canceled 400 flights today in anticipation of as much as 2 inches of snow expected in the region.

AirTran also thinned its schedule, announcing Thursday plans to cut 32 of its flights today because of the threat of snow. That included flights in and out of Atlanta.

7:47 AM: Cold, fog delays some schools

The coldest temperatures in a month and heavy fog caused some schools to begin with a two-hour delay today in four counties surrounding Indianapolis.

Carmel Clay was the largest of the districts with a two-hour delay. Others listed by WTHR (Channel 13) were Eastern Hancock, Hamilton Heights, Lebanon, Northwestern (Shelby County), Shelby Eastern, Shelbyville Central, Sheridan, Southwestern (Shelby County) and Western Boone.

The temperature in Indianapolis dipped to 6 degrees at 5 a.m. and again at 7 a.m. today. That’s the coldest temperature in the city since Jan. 10.

Patchy areas of dense fog were expected to lift by 8 a.m. The fog cut visibility to less than a mile in some areas this morning, and created ice on sidewalks and roads.

A few flurries were possible tonight and again from Saturday night through Monday, the National Weather Service at Indianapolis reported. Across the state, some minor accumulations may be possible, especially from Vincennes east through Bedford and Seymour.

Lows through Wednesday were expected to dip into the teens.
