Ohio-based drug distributor Cardinal Health will lay off another 12 employees at its Indianapolis distribution center, bringing the total to 49 since a workforce reduction was initiated in late November.

The publicly traded Dublin, Ohio-based company has shed mainly warehouse workers at its facility, 6812 Corporate Drive. The company filed a notice with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, but in a letter posted to the state’s Web site, says it did so voluntarily.

“Although we do not consider this job action to be covered … we are nonetheless providing notice in the hope that it may aid the displaced workers in becoming re-employed,” the company’s letter to the state says.

Cardinal laid off 37 workers effective Jan. 31 and a second round was begun Feb. 2 of 12 workers that is effective April 3.

Attempts to reach the company today were unsuccessful.

The second-biggest drug distributor in the U.S. to McKesson Corp., Cardinal Health has recently seen its bottom lines damped by delays in hospital spending, Dow Jones Newswire reported last month. During its most recent quarter, Cardinal Health reported a profit of $234.5 million, or 65 cents a share, down from $316.5 million, or 88 cents, a year earlier.
