George "No Show" Jones shows!
So George Jones actually showed for the show in Oklahoma last Friday. Which is good for me since I had already driven down there anyway and it would have sucked balls if the show would have been cancelled...
I would have playe with him back in February, but had to miss the two shows we did since I already had il Troubadore gigs booked for the weekend here--and then we were supposed to play a couple with him near the end of the month (Feb.) in Florida which he ended up cancelling-which meant we didn't get to play either since he was the headliner. Ugh.
I had to miss the Wisconsin gig (again, a conflict) for the huge C&W festival in June. He didn't show up there, and didn't even bother to tell his crew so all the sound guys/band were there and he was still in Nashville (probably drinking whiskey--hahah).
Fortunately, it being a big festival, Ray didn't have to cancel too.
The big irony of last Friday's show, is the current Buzz (like the NUVO/Indy.com for Durant) magazine the front page featured Jones with a headline 'Known as "No Show" no more!' At the time, we weren't sure he would show, so we waited with bated breath(s).
So, I kept wondering while driving all the way to Oklahoma from Locals Only (where I had a gig the night before) if I was going to get there, having spent all this time on the road and money for gas only to show up and there be no show to play. Then have to drive back to Indy for the 3 other shows I had to play this past weekend. That wouldn't have been cool.
But hey...that's life...

Ah, George. Is he missing shows because of health or just because he's ornery?
I don't know if it's true or not, but my favorite drunk George Jones story is the one about how they used to have to lash him to his mike stand just to try to keep him propped up.

There's too much speculation about the missed Florida shows--and apparently he was just drunk and at home in Nashville for the Wisconsin show. I really don't know--but it seems that most of his past "missed show" problems were due to the alcohol and drug abuse. He's apparently cleaned up his act a bit lately (hence the Buzz article's subtitle) but as far as I'm concerned he's batting about 50% right now--hah!
He did sound great though, so it doesn't seem to have affected his ability to perform, or rather, his ability to perform isn't the reason he's not showing.
I've actually heard that story about him too--I have no idea if it's true (or if any of the stories I hear on the road are, for that matter)--but it wouldn't surprise me if it were.
