Drum roll, please: the fourth annual Indianapolis Theatre Fringe Festival is getting under way.

What's the Fringe? Indy's answer to an alternative theater movement that began in Edinburgh, Scotland, after World War 2. IndyFringe presents an opportunity to see lots of creative, innovative and sometimes provocative artists -- mainly in theatre, but also in the visual arts, film and magic.

Staring Friday, Aug. 22, and continuing through Sunday, Aug. 31, 53 acts will give more than 270 performances at six venues on or around Massachusetts Ave. Many performers are Hoosiers. Others are traveling here from a dozen states, and foreign countries including Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Just a few of the highlights I'm looking forward to:

-- "My Friend Hitler," an adaptation of a 1960s Mishima play about the human side of Adolf Hitler prior to his rise to power.

-- "Jealous Sky," about a fantasy meeting between two early female pilots, Amelia Earhart and Harriet Quimby.

-- "Dr. Goddard and Mr. Angst," Hoosier playwright Larry Manion's look at an angry young man's confrontation with a dubious psychiatrist.

-- "Peace on Terror," a new, Bloomington company's drama addressing the issue of violence in neighborhoods both near and far, and

-- "Meet the Rock!," Samuel Harper's look at artist and illustrator Norman Rockwell.

Look for my preview package running in the Friday, Aug. 22 Go! section of The Indianapolis Star. It has already been posted here on indy.com.

More information, including a complete listing of events, is available at www.indyrfringe.org.
