NEW YORK (AP) -- Forty seasons after making his unscheduled Metropolitan Opera debut as Maurizio in Cilea's "Adriana Lecouvreur," Placido Domingo is returning to the role.

Originally scheduled to conduct the revival, which opens Feb. 6, Domingo will take over the starring tenor role, the company said Wednesday.

He replaces Marcelo Alvarez, who took over from Salvatore Licitra as Manrico in the Met's new production of Verdi's "Il Trovatore," which opens Feb. 16. Domingo, who turns 67 in January, is scheduled to sing six performances.

Domingo replaced an ill Franco Corelli on Sept. 28, 1968, making his Met debut in "Adriana" opposite Renata Tebaldi. This time, Maria Guleghina sings the title role.
