Not sure that this counts as a "music" post but since it is about Led Zeppelin, I figure it works. I heard today that there are no plans to release a "Guitar Hero" Led Zeppelin version. According to my not-so-offical source, but double checked on The Wall Street Journal, Jimmy Page has said no to the popular video game because he is uncomfortable giving anyone access to the master recordings of Zeppelin's catalogue. Some are saying that Zep is above this campiness and I am inclined to agree...yes, I know all about the Cadillac commerical (Which I still think was a stupid move but only because the tag line was "Break on Through" and should have used the Doors song instead, but I digress). Zep has not given in to cheap tricks (no pun intended) they have not sold out and even the commerical was for a finite period of time, unlike a video game that has to constantly be revamped and revised. There are some bands who will knock themselevs out to market themselevs to the nines...see Gene Simmons and KISS (love them, but even Gene admits he sold out for the almighty dollar). Zep doesn't need it and will not be cheapened by a plastic guitar and five buttons. This is what real legends are made of. Future guitar heroes who want to study the masters...pick up a real guitar and learn to play, don't just pick up a high score.
I'm not soo against it, I think it's a fun and great way to get a younger generation exposed to classic rock. I mean if all they know is today's music, we are in big trouble for the future. As a player of Guitar Hero and Rock Band I would be happy to see some Zepplin tunes, but I would also understand if they don't get like getting bundled into the same game as Sum 41.
The Who just released like 12 songs for Rock Band, so I'll be fine playing those until Zepplin changes their mind.
I'm still waiting for them to release Triangle Hero.
I am not against the game...not at all, but it does bug me when I see kids acting like it is just like the real deal when it's not. I will definitely give the game props for introducing my son to classic rock and that is fabulous, but I would just like to think that some bands are above all of that. Zeppelin is one of them. I know they are mere mortals, but I would like to believe in the fantasy a little while longer...personally my son says there is not enough cowbell in the world so maybe he is waiting for Cowbell Hero

I'm not really against it either. I agree with Victory33 as far as getting younger people into Classic Rock tunes and such. It's also a great avenue for some of these Classic Rock bands to make some extra cash. I'm sure Aerosmith's deal wit GH wasn't cheap, and it isn't even all Aerosmith songs...most of them are, but not all. With the record industry creeping along, they bands have to make up for it somewhere, why not on video games? NOt to mention that most of the classic rock tunes on these games are from bands who have not released anything for a while, so good for them.
Personally, I am a little concerned with the recording industry...we have stripped the music world down to almost nothing which means the music has to matter all the more. We live in a society of downloads and singles, videos have been relegated to a few hours bock on MTV and VH1, Heck, no one is even putting any money into album art the way they used to and because CDs are small, there isn't a whole lotta space to work with there. No one has to make a good album anymore, just have a hit single...that tune has to matter all the more. I find it interesting that the classic bands are still the ones making the money in the end, Aerosmith, KISS, Zep, they knew how to last in an industry that survives on its people being here today...gone...later today.

Yes, the pop and mainstream rock recording industry is in pretty bad condition. There are only like 5 bands that have seriously survived and still find success since the 90's. X-103's new rock is straight garbage, all current day pop is pretty horrible and don't even get me started on the rap industry these days.
So people aren't paying for crappy CD's anymore, they are buying singles on mp3. This should be the time when people try the hardest to make good music since your crap filler tracks aren't gonna get downloaded.
I wish ESPN would pull an MTV and not show sports except for like 6AM-7AM....Haha, that would last about 1 day and the world would riot!
But still, if you search out good bands, they do exist. Not too many on the radio these days, but very talented and good bands are out there waiting to be heard on independent labels.
But quick question? When did Kiss become a classic band? Why dress like heavy metal and sing pop-rock songs?!
In my opinion, it isn't the music that makes KISS great. In fact, there is nothing particularly tricky about the music at all and the lyrics are fairly benign. What separated them from some of the others was the marketing and for whatever reason, they have that lasting "something". Personally, I thought they cemented themselevs as a "classic" when they took off their makeup and still had some success. I was just as thrilled when they put it back on. KISS cannot be compared with some of the greats by any means, but they did it their way and it worked...and continues to work. They are by far one of the most recognizable bands in the world and as far as their music...well, they kept it simple and made a fortune...like Gene himself has said "When you get it down to its simplest form, then you really have something." Their songs translate well on acoustic guitars (check out their unplugged special to verify) and their is a basic truth there...I want to Rock and Roll all Nite and Party Every Day... OK, I still don't understand Deuce, but I guess that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things...Let's face it, does the term "Black Dog" appear anywhere in the song of the same name?

Agreed. KISS is a sorry excuse for classic rock. As they proved, without the makeup they were just horrible.

Or the more obvious "Cowbell Hero."
Or the more obvious "Cowbell Hero."
If you are the singer in Rock Band, you get to do the cowbell with the microphone on "Don't Fear the Reaper".
My son told me that...he loves that song!
Led Zeppelin hasn't sold out? How do you define selling out? They have every kind of merchandise under the sun with their name plastered on it: t-shirts, hats, panties, lighters, coffee mugs, instruments, baby clothes, flags, posters, belt bucks, and who knows what else.

I don't think lending their songs to one of the best-selling video games of all time for a HUGE amount of cash would be selling out any more than they already have.
