Jim Canary is the head of conservation at the Lilly Library, an often overlooked treasure trove of rare books and literary manuscripts. In 2001, the library received a call from the proud new owner of the "On the Road" scroll manuscript, Jim Irsay, who wanted expert help in taking care of the important document. Thus began another facet of the interesting life of Jim Canary, the perfect man for the job. Last week, Canary spoke about his adventures as a paper preservation expert at the IMA. He showed photos of his adventures in Tibet, seeking and finding craftsmen in the art of papermaking . He was also allowed to inspect a vast archive of ancient manuscripts, some of them in scrolled formats. His informative and entertaining lecture also detailed more recent exploits, traveling the world in his role as The Scrollmaster, overcoming the challenges of transporting and displaying a fragile 120 ft. long manuscript and learning about new questions from curious audience members revealed a fascination with the Kerouac scroll and indeed, with scrolls and manuscripts in general. preservation techniques by working with various archives and museums.
