In 1958, Robert Frank loaded up a film camera with 16mm black and white stock and began shooting "Pull My Daisy", loosely based on the third act of an unproduced play written by Jack Kerouac called "The Beat Generation". Considered the only true "Beat" film, the cast included poets Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso, painter Larry Rivers, and musician David Amram. In the editing room, Frank was faced with the challenge of making some sort of narrative sense of the chaos he'd recorded. The silent footage really gelled into an organic whole when Kerouac added the narration, which he improvised in three sessions while listening to jazz on headphones. This Sunday,, August 17th, the IMA presents the Robert Frank Film Marathon from 12:30 to 5pm at the DeBoest Lecture Hall. Other Frank films shown at this marathon include "Life Dances On" and "Energy and How to Get It". FREE! Don't miss this event if you are a fan of innovative, experimental art making.
