10 Years Younger

I'm a sucker for a makeover show --no matter what type, as transformations fascinate me. A couple days ago, I caught the worst one ever: 10 Years Younger on TLC. There was just a little bit too much tough love involved for me to watch without cringing. Yet I cringed and watched anyway because I just wanted to see things get better. I don't think I'd be able to handle it again.

They start out with the contestant in a sound proof glass booth out in the middle of a busy sidewalk. They ask random people to give their opinion of how old they think the subject looks. This poor 48 year old woman was told she looked an average of 59 years old --and that's an average. Some people said she looked 15 years older than that.

Then they removed any ounce of self-esteem she had left and played the clips for her about what people said. It was agonizing. I know that What Not to Wear works on a similar premise, but as mean as I've thought they can be, this took it to a new level. I guess in the end, if I had to hear that I look like crap, I'd rather hear it from a friend than a random stranger on the sidewalk who is being coaxed to "Go ahead! Be HONEST! Say what you REALLY think".

After all this they did make her look a lot better, and they put her back in the booth and the average was a year or two younger than her real age. But I won't watch again --unless they put Britney Spears in the booth...

Interesting...I agree, wouldn't like the too much tough stuff. But I do want to check this out. And it does look like Brit is aging in light years now!

Eek! That sounds awful. I won't be watching that one.

I like makeover shows, sometimes, but one thing I don't care for is when stylists pay no attention to the types of clothing people are most comfortable with.

For instance, if a woman dresses kind of sporty but just doesn't wear nice, stylish sporty stuff, why would you make her over wearing a fancy dress, strappy heals, an up-do and sparkly jewelry?

But that's just me.

I have friends that I long to makeover. But I think it would cause strife.
