10 ways to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful
Brought to you by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful
1. Plant a tree! Neighborhoods or community organizations can receive 20+ trees to plant along residential streets or in public spaces as part of the NeighborWoods program. KIB will help you organize your planting. To learn more, visit www.kibi.org or call Sarah Grain at 317.264.7555, ext.106.
2. Recycle! Help conserve our natural resources. As you run errands, look for the large green Recycle Indianapolis “Drop-Off” containers, placed around the city – they’re free to use! To find a recycling drop-off site near you and to learn about other resources for recycling items such as cell phones, cardboard, etc., visit www.kibi.org or call 317.264.7555. For curbside recycling, go to www.recycleindianapolis.org.
3. Organize a neighborhood litter cleanup! Litter can harm children, animals, and the environment. Research also shows strong links between litter and crime. Organizing a neighborhood cleanup is a great way to help make Indianapolis cleaner, safer, and more beautiful. To organize a cleanup, contact Tammy Stevens at tstevens@kibi.org or 317.264.7555, ext. 116.
4. Adopt-A-Block! Through the Adopt-A-Block program, KIB provides each block coordinator with a cleanup kit. Clean blocks may earn flowers, trees, and mini-grants. For more information on becoming a block coordinator, contact Sarah Grain at sgrain@kibi.org or 317.264.7555 ext. 106.
5. Order trash boxes and recycling bins! Keep your event litter-free with KIB’s trash box program. Through a partnership with WTHR, KIB is able to provide trash boxes and for only $3.50 each. Recycling bins are loaned free of charge. For trash boxes, contact Laura Fox at lfox@kibi.org or 317.264.7555, ext. 100. For recycling bin requests, please visit www.kibi.org/ .
6. Find greenspace opportunities in your neighborhood! KIB, through IPL Project Greenspace, can help you transform a barren space into a pocket park or community garden. Transforming these spaces enhances aesthetics of communities while improving safety and livability of neighborhoods. For details, contact Phil Schaefer at pschaefer@kibi.org or 317.264.7555, ext. 109.
7. Adopt-A-Median! This simply requires that your neighborhood association, business or organization takes the time to care for the median you adopt. In exchange, your business or organization will get a sign on the median with its name prominently displayed. For more information, visit www.kibi.org or contact Mark Adler at
madler@kibi.org or 317.264.7555, ext. 105.
8. Volunteer! Last year, nearly 45,000 volunteers donated their time, sweat and expertise to over 500 KIB community improvement projects. Join us this year! To learn more, visit www.kibi.org or contact Sarah Grain at sgrain@kibi.org or 317.264.7555, ext. 106.
9. Make a tax-deductible donation to KIB! KIB strives to assist communities, many with scarce resources. As a non-profit organization, our projects would not be possible without the generosity of committed individuals, businesses and organizations. Donations may be monetary or in-kind contributions, such as supplies (mulch, plants, etc.) To learn more, visit www.kibi.org or call 317.264.7555.
10. Buy a KIB rain barrel! KIB is now selling house-made rain barrels. Collecting rain water reduces strain on sewage systems, while using rain water to maintain gardens reduces water bills. Each barrel purchased pays for one tree to be planted in Indianapolis. For more information, visit www.kibi.org or call 317.264.7555.

Planting trees is easy to do, and helps the value of your property.
I bought two maples from AffordableTrees last year and I love ’em.
