Indy denizens seem to have a love-hate relationship with their town. Do you plan on sticking around for the long haul?

I am staying here and working now, but officially moving myself and my family here on Feb 28. I have been here for 3 weeks and LOVE it. We ar eactually moving here FROM Florida, to which I usually get some variation of “Why?”. I usually answer by asking why they are still here if it’s bad.
Fact is, I like the weather and the people much better here than in FL. The unemployment rate is lower here (17% back home) and there are so many cool things that my kids will get to be exposed to here that I could not offer back home.
Then the cost of living is a LOT lower, pay is higher, and people are friendlier. I’ll miss the salt water fishing, but I’ll replace it with visits to one of the dozens of parks you have here.
I am very proud to be becoming a Hoosier and look forward to everything that comes with it.
Oh my other reason? Look outside. I know lots of people think it’s a nuisance but let me tell you…everything covered in snow is beautiful to a new guy like me.

Having lived on the Southside of Indianapolis my whole life and now working at one of the city’s amazing attractions, I would say Indianapolis is the best place to live/work. I’ve been able to watch the city change over the years and it just keeps getting better. For those of you that claim there is nothing to do, you just haven’t looked. I’ve been working at the Park since May 2008 and being in the city 5 days out of the week has really opened my eyes to all the different activities. (And that doesn’t just include the museums and attractions within the Park.) Who knows if I will be here forever but I will always call Indianapolis my home. I can’t wait to see the changes in the city as we prepare for the Super Bowl in 2012!!!!!!
Need something to do in Indy, visit www.inwhiteriver.com to check out all the activities going on in White River State Park!

I was born and rasied in Indy, and have lived near 3 other cities—Detroit, Washington DC, Phoenix—and can say that Indy is the best place I’ve lived. The people are nicer, good place to raise a family, crime nor traffic is as bad, good cost of living, a number of things to do, a close drive to other large cities, etc. When I was growing up there in the 80s, there wasnt much to it. But it has changed for the better. Every city has its problems, but Indy’s arent as profound in my opinion. Some things have changed for the worse (crime and education) but everything else is for the better I think. It seems that Indy residents have an inferiority complex. They think their city is among the worst, when its not true. The Places Rated Almanac listed its metro area is the 2nd best large metro area to live in. That says a lot! Indy has come a long way in re-inventing itself and has a lot to be proud of. I have no plans to move anytime soon. I love Indy!!!
I think it is you who has the inferiority complex. That fact that you choose “CastletonSquare” as your user name says enough.

Living downtown makes me want to stay.. but I need a target/whole foods and better/improved mass transit system to stick around for any length of time.
The greatest thing about Indy is the fact that it develops in the right direction. Just look at the progress in downtown. It makes you feel good to see new restaurants, bars, residential projects, arts and other businesses open up. I moved back to Indy a year ago and I love the city – especially downtown.

I moved here 5+ years ago from Cincinnati and I love it here. Baring any unforeseen circumstances, Indy is my home.
I immigrated to Indianapolis from Germany many years ago. I lived in Indianapolis and Carmel, transferred out to California in 86’, was happy leaving the Indy city. Now I am older and I have been back to visit Indianapolis the last three years. I feel at home here, I have family here, four fantastic grandchildren, and I am coming back, hopefully next year. I love Indianapolis but I hate the winter weather. Nothing is ever perfect.
i moved here from chicago about two years ago. before i arrived i heard nothing but great things about the city. there was talk about how clean, family friendly, and safe it is. what i found was much different. while it is somewhat cleaner than most large cities, it is neither safe nor family friendly. not only is crime on the rise, but people in general are unhappy and very passive aggressive. the roads and traffic are absurd (especially for a city of its size). and the arts venue is nearly nonexistant. with penrod being robbed and the city’s arts budget cut, it’s only going to get worse. and unless you’re into kayaking in diseased waters or biking on a sidewalk, there’s nothing for an outdoorsman to do. add to that the fact that there are relatively few high paying jobs, but lots of recent grads, the job market is bleak too. i look forward to moving on to a real world class city (like sweet home chicago).

In 2000 when I was writing my Master’s thesis, Indy was one of my target cities. It needed work; a lot of work. Cut to 8 years later; I have been to the city frequently owing to a certain significant other living here, and I am greatly impressed with the changes. There’s a few too many parking lots in strategic places for my taste, but that will change with time.
I’m 38 and have lived in SF, St.Louis and Chicago for a combined total of 26 yrs. I moved back to my birthplace in 2002 when I was planning on moving to Philadelphia. I can truly say I really do think Indianapolis has found a “sweet spot” in city size and activity.
Yeah it’s not Chicago. No it doesn’t have mountains or oceans and the economic climate leaves a lot to be desired. I understand all that however, it’s a lot better than it was yrs ago and I believe it’s turning in the right direction. Anybody can hate on a city that’s easy but for anybody to deny Indy is no better than it was 20 yrs ago is blind.
