 Democratic state legislators Sen. Julia Carson left, and Rep. William Crawford (D-Indianapolis) discussed a bill in the Indiana General Assembly on Feb. 1, 1977. Carson began her political career in 1965, serving as a legislative assistant for Congressman Andy Jacobs Jr. In 1972, she was elected to the first of two terms in the Indiana House of Representatives, then was elected to the Indiana Senate in 1976. She served in the senate until 1990, when she successfully ran for Center Township Trustee. In 1997, she succeeded Jacobs as Indiana's 10th District Representative to Congress.
