MERRIAM, Ind. -- In a small, out of the way church cemetery in this tiny northern Indiana community lies the remains of one Samuel Wilson, known affectionately as "Uncle Sam." Yeah ... THE Uncle Sam, according to some old timers who believe Christian Chapel Cemetery holds the remains of the East Coast meat butcher who inspired the famous patriotic cariacature still used today. But the good folks of Troy, New York -- site of the official Uncle Sam memorial and annual Uncle Sam Parade -- would take issue with that. And they did ... back in the early 1960s when a vigorous political debate between Indiana and New York politicians led to Congress having to settle the dispute once and for all, giving Troy the official designation. Folks in Indiana never doubted their Sam Wilson was BORN in Troy, they just dispute where he died. And when you read the fine print ... Congress stopped just short of deciding where Uncle Sam's bones are resting. Could they be in tiny Merriam, Indiana?
