7. Eric Gordon committed to the University of Illinois in November of his junior year but later changed his mind. Indiana University fans made him feel at home during Midnight Madness celebration on Oct. 13, 2006. That morning, Eric Gordon Sr., told The Star that his son would play for IU. It didn't get much bigger than the North Central-Lawrence North showdown on Jan. 19, 2006. ESPN2 let the nation in on Indianapolis' not-so-little secret: Three of the best prep players in the country played ball about 10 miles apart. Greg Oden and Mike Conley were on their way to becoming McDonald's All-Americans. Eric Gordon would receive the same honor the following year.
The stars didn't disappoint. Oden had 33 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Conley had 18 points and two assists. Eric Gordon led NC with 27 points and six rebounds. College coaches Thad Matta and Bruce Weber were part of an enthusiastic crowd of 3,200 that filled North Central's gym. Lawrence North won 78-59.

Less than a week after the state final, Eric Gordon shared the floor with the game's best high school players in the McDonald's All-American Game. Gordon scored 13 points to help lead the West to a 114-112 victory.

Lawrence North's defense swarmed Eric Gordon each time it faced him. Mike Conley guarded Gordon on the perimeter, and Greg Oden was waiting in the paint. Gordon scored 11 points in this 2005 playoff game at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
AWHHH! Baby you know what I like.

Got Gordon? IU fans couldn't get enough of their freshman hero. They celebrated again after Gordon scored 22 points to lead IU past Purdue and its in-state recruits 77-68 on Feb. 19. That game marked the first time since Bob Knight and Gene Keady's days that both programs entered the contest ranked in the top 15.
Illinois bumped Eric Gordon during the pregame introductions, and kept a body on him throughout the game. Gordon scored 19 points but made just 3 of 13 shots as IU escaped with an 83-79 win.
Eric Gordon played in a state championship in high school, competed against future NBA players during the summer and stole the show with Michael Jordan in attendance. Nothing, however, prepared him for the treatment he received in his one and only visit to Illinois, the school he committed to before changing his mind. Illinois fans began booing, jeering and swearing at Gordon long before the game started. Afterward, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas criticized the Illinois fans' behavior, and Illinois officials apologized, saying the actions were "disappointing and intolerable."

He's off to a flying start. Eric Gordon throws home two of his 33 points in his college debut against Chattanooga. "I've heard a lot of hype about a lot of players over the year," IU veteran radio announcer Don Fischer said. "Few ever live up to the hype. Eric Gordon is different though. He's everything people say, and a little bit more." Gordon's 33 points set the IU record for most by a freshman in his debut. It wound up as his career high.

For three years, Eric Gordon battled Lawrence North's Greg Oden (right) and Mike Conley. The two teams met in the Hinkle Regional in 2004 and 2005. Both times, Lawrence North won to end North Central's season. In this 2005 regional final, Oden scored 17 points as Lawrence North won 56-42. Gordon, a sophomore, was limited to 11 points on 3 of 14 shooting. Gordon finished his career 1-7 against the Oden-Conley led Wildcats.

With his college situation settled, Eric Gordon focused on dominating during his senior year. ESPN again rolled into town, this time for a Feb. 1, 2007 duel against Michael Jordan's sons. With MJ watching from the North Central stands, and often shaking his head, Gordon scored 43 points on a variety of dunks, drives and 3-pointers. Two came on this drive against Jeff Jordan.

After an emotional regular season that included a visit to Illinois, a hyped victory over Purdue and the removal of its head coach, IU stumbled into the NCAA Tournament. D.J. White, Armon Bassett and Eric Gordon said the tournament offered a second chance. No matter. IU lost to Arkansas in the first round. Gordon was held to 8 points, matching his season low.
He shattered the IU freshman scoring record by averaging 20.9 points, third-highest in Big Ten conference history.
Hello, NBA. In a move expected even before he signed with IU, Eric Gordon announces April 7 that he will enter the NBA draft. "I am doing this to compete at the highest level," Gordon told the crowd gathered at the Jewish Community Center, where it all started. "Not for fame."
Thursday night, June 26, Gordon is expected to be among the first 10 players selected. He could go as high as No. 5. If Gordon is drafted in the top 5, he will be the third Indianapolis player taken that high in the past two years. Greg Oden was No. 1 overall in 2007, and Mike Conley was No. 4.
