JR ROTC Cadet C/SSG Courtney Thompson, a graduating senior from Thomas Carr Howe High School, was awarded a Bronze Medal on May 15, 2008. Selected by her school as an outstanding JR ROTC member, Courtney is the latest of five seniors so honored by the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  
Others honored at their schools were JR ROTC cadets C/COL Whitney Cross of Arlington, C/SGT Ivory White of Broad Ripple, C/CPT Megan Adams of George Washington and C/LCOL Kristan LaPorte of North Central High Schools.  
Also honored earlier by receiving a Gold Medal was ROTC cadet CDT Joshua M. Warrick, a college senior who is being commissioned into one of the U. S. Armed Services. ( Photo submitted by Joann Wasson )

A seedling waits to be planted at Key Learning Community School Tuesday, May 13, 2008.  Students and volunteers are planting a community garden that will be free for the community to take whatever they need.  Teacher Rene Motz says, "We felt powerless.  We were not allowed to give fresh food.  We decided that we would grow this for our hungry neighbors."  A group from Key Learning Community School will also go to Jamaica in October to plant trees and hold a teen summit.  Danese Kenon/The Star

Fresh asparagus sold for 13.5 cents a stalk at the Grand Opening of the Binford Farmers Market Saturday, May 10, 2008 from James Phillips, of Red Key.  Although he sells vegetables throughout the summer he mostly sells melons.  "I'd rather have melons than anything.  I hope to have strawberries next week."
