Today:
I started out as a political reporter, but it was always just a scheme to weasel my way into writing and editing arts & entertainment news, especially movies. I did that starting in April 2001, first at a medium-sized paper in Florida and then at the Indy Star beginning June 2005.
I absolutely love living in Indy. I'm flummoxed when people knock our cultural scene. To me, our array of museums and galleries, restaurants, theaters and sports venues is first-rate. Not to mention, two very good art cinemas.
Credentials? OK. I've got a bachelor's in cinema from New York University and a master's in journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. I've won more than two dozen journalism awards, including the top prize for arts criticism in national contests. And I make a mean General Tso's chicken.

Don't suppose you have that term paper still sitting around somewhere do you? That sounds like an outrageously interesting idea (might be because I adore The Watchmen, though).
Thank you for you comments - I kind of felt the same way about the belittlement but I have never been sure how to tell our HR dep. But I do save ALL the bad e-mail from them and one day I will take it up with the right people.
Chris:
Last year I picked "Pans Labyrinth" as the Best Foreign Film. In doing so, I commented on the fact that while "The Lives of Others" had yet to be released here, I couldn't imagine it surpassing "Pans." I'm still not sure it did, although, like you, I also was "blown away." It was simply superb.
As to the issue of foreign film nominees that have yet to appear in Indianapolis, why were we able to get them last year? Obviously, if they are not available to the country, then I stand corrected. However, I would like to hear from someone at Landmark concerning this issue.
Finally, you certainly are correct concerning the arcane methods used to nominate foreign films. For example, how is it possible that the spectacular "Diving Bell and the Butterfly" was not its country's submission for best picture? The political intrigue in certain countries, particularly Spain and Italy, make this category less than it should be.
Thank you your post made me laugh. When I posted my rant I had everything in separate paragraphs, it just uploaded that way and I wasn't about to fix it. I really can't believe you even read it!
