Groups

Indy.com is a destination for you to create and join groups, so that you can socialize with others around a similar interest, hobby or topic. Groups can have public or private discussions, post photos or videos of their interest and keep a calendar of events related to their interest.

Find a group

There might be an existing group that meets your needs. Simply click on the “Groups” tab in the navigation. Once on the page, you can either browse by category or search by keyword. In addition, you can also view the newest groups or the most popular.

Joining a group

Once you’ve found a group you’re interested in, just click the “join” link to become a member. Since most of our groups are public – meaning anyone can join – you’ll be automatically accepted. If the group is a private group, the owner of the group will need to approve your admission before you can participate.

Create a group

If you’re interested in something, but don’t see a group already created for that, feel free to start one yourself. To create a group the first thing you need to do is select what kind of group it is:

  1. Click the “Create a group” link
  2. Select a category that your group falls under
  3. Select a subcategory
  4. Click next

Now you’re ready to fill in all the information:

Title: This is what you want the group to be called. Example: Beer Lovers of Indianapolis

Group URL: Just a single word or group of words, that will make up the Web address of the group. For example, the URL for the hypothetical beer group could be beerlovers.indy.com

Avatar: An image (250 pixels x 250 pixels) that will be a defacto logo for the group.

Badge: a small image (16 pixels x 16 pixels) that will display on your user profile.

Description: This field is where you tell people what your group is all about.

Topics: An optional area where you can add tags to make it easier for people to find your group. For example, the beer lovers group might list several different words related to brewing or types of beer.

Public or private: Pretty self-explanatory, this is where you indicate if you want to limit who can see the group.

Transferring ownership

Currently, we don’t have a method to transfer ownership of a group to a different person, however, we will be adding that functionality. In the meantime you can promote another user to admin.

Deleting a group

If you need to delete a group that you’ve created, just click the delete button. You cannot delete groups created by others.

What determines “Most Popular?

The popularity is calculated by counting the number of users who have joined the group within the last seven days. The more people who have joined during that time, the higher the ranking of the group.
