DTV Conversion: A Brave New World Of Weather Channels
I realize I’m one of approximately seven people in the state of Indiana who doesn’t have cable, so this might be of limited interest. Anyway, this is my odyssey.
As the previous date for the conversion of our sacred television signals to all-digital loomed, I went to the government web site for the coupon to acquire the magic box. Exhibiting the fine planning we’ve come to expect from our government, they were out of coupons. They were out for months. It looked for a while like I would be deprived of horrid sitcoms and unrealistic cop shows (the cops and lawyers are always right? really?). But then they pushed back the date and printed up more coupons. I got mine in the mail last week.
I drove to three different stores listed as carrying the converter only to discover that none of them had it. I quickly came to my senses and ordered the thing online. It arrived today.
It’s at this point that I would expect to tell you that hooking it up was nightmare. I am not mechanically inclined. I have to call tech support just to work an abacus. Remarkably, I married cables to holes in an instant and had it up and running. I DIDN’T EVEN HAVE TO READ THE DIRECTIONS!
Before the box, I received three channels. Now, be still my heart, I have fifteen. Sure, four of them are weather channels and two are religious stations, but it’s still quite an improvement. I can watch PBS again, at long last. Jim Lehrer, your ass is mine.
So, am I the only one who has had to go through all of this? Is anyone still not converted? Which local weather channel is the best? Is one weather map prettier than the others?
I have the most basic cable possible, so I didn’t have to go through this. Giving up the cable has been tempting, but it’s hard to give up the Comedy Central. And I never watch the weather channel, so I couldn’t tell you which is best.
Congrats on getting PBS back! While at college in Bloomington, I didn’t have cable. The only channel my rabbit ears would pick up was PBS. I probably saw more “Between the Lions” and “Arthur” than appropriate for a college student.

I missed PBS a lot. It’s really the only channel I need. And with the DTV business you get an extra PBS station called Create that’s filled with how-to shows. I watched Bob Ross paint some happy little trees yesterday.
I’ve never been able to justify getting cable. There are only four or five stations that interest me, and what I’d have to pay to get those four or five stations is kind of nuts. I wish they’d move to an a la carte system, wherein you choose the channels you want and pay a set rate for each. Then maybe I’d go for it.
