More information about this event...

Breaking Ground features 21 images by local photographer Susan Fleck, depicting scenes from Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Montana, Washington and even Norway. The show is open March 24-May 9.

The photos of barns, fields, fences and other subjects were taken during a Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis. Fleck chose to focus on rural landscapes because, though she grew up in Indiana, she had never taken photos depicting the familiar scenery.

"There is beautiful farmland all around us, but most people never stop to look at it," she explains. "This exhibition shows farms as art."

Although Fleck often shoots in black and white, the works in this exhibition are in color, many with hazy edges and a soft focus that give the images an ethereal quality.

"I grew up on a farm, so taking the photos was like going back in time for me, and the images became dreamlike," she explains.

The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. Fleck will attend the opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 28.

An accomplished commercial and art photographer, Fleck has participated in 26 solo, two-person and juried group exhibitions since 2002 and has published two books. She is professor emerita in the Pulliam School of Journalism at Franklin College. She also owns a business, Susan Fleck Photography.
