And they're off!

Today is opening day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And in proper race tradition, rainy May weather put a damper on rookie orientation and the IndyCar practice. That leaves me with the afternoon to dwell on other important 500 related matters – parties. The schedule is filling up fast folks (in my head that sounded like Tom Carnegie). Here’s what’s on my radar so far.
Wednesday, May 13
The 10th Annual Racing to Recovery Gala, 6-10 pm
Hosted by the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation at the Ritz Charles in Carmel. This is an amazing event in support of an amazing foundation. For me, the best part is the silent auction. It never fails to amuse me to write my dad’s name on auction items.

Friday, May 15
500 Oldtimers Club Banquet
Ok, so it may not be the hottest 500 event, but the history in the room at this banquet leaves me in awe. The men and women who attend and are honored on this evening made the Indianapolis 500 what it is today. The stories and achievements will seem all the more impressive this year as we enter the Indianapolis 500 Centennial era.
Tuesday, May 19
Front Row Party, 7-9 pm
The annual Front Row Party hosted by Crown Royal in Broadripple. This party is never a disappointment – good people, good times. Live entertainment at 9:30 pm by Indianapolis favorites Dave and Rae. Tickets are available for $50 by emailing throught the website.

Tuesday, May 19
Celebrity Bartending Challenge
A new event for May, hosted by 6 Lounge and Larry Foyt. Proceeds of the event to benefit Olivia Newton-John’s foundation, Full Speed 2 a Cure. Curing Breast Cancer one lap at a time.

Friday, May 22
Miller Lite Carb Day
A must do for fans of racing and fans of partying alike. Take a break from the party (or kick it off if you’ve had a late start) with the Firestone Freedom 100 Race at 12:30 pm. Scratch that, keep the party going AND watch the race. I suppose it’s noteworthy that 3 Doors Down plays at 3:30 pm.

Last Row Party, 5:30-9 pm
Nice guys start last…a tradition since 1973. The event is held at the Brickyard Crossing Resort and is a perfect chance to root on your favorite driver – or have a laugh or two at their expense.

Saturday, May 23
Rhythm Fantasy 500 Race Party, 9-11 pm
Hosted by A.C. Slater- I mean, Mario Lopez “with appearances by other invited celebrity guests”, whatever that means. Party with RadioNow 100.9 personalities and stuff yourself with chips and queso. Who are we kidding? You just want to see A.C.
