Nov. 20: Get well, dear car

So, uh, remember that one time (a few weeks ago) when I crashed my car?

Me too.

No one was injured — don’t worry. Well, no one unless you’re counting my 2007 Scion tC. You should know I’m pretty partial to my car, and I’ve treated my first big-kid purchase better than most other things in my life. (I once cut off all my Totally Hair Barbie’s hair, and sometimes I forget to feed my cat. Oh, I’m kidding . . . about the Barbie.)

So when I got into what was slightly more than a fender-bender on Halloween, I was, shall we say, distressed.

My car has now gone into collision- repair oblivion, which ain’t a great place when its owner only knows how to pop the hood. It means I have no idea what’s going on with the car until I get it back in a week (Nov. 27! Eep!).

But thank to esurance, I can go to www.esurancevehiclestatus.com, type in my phone number (if you have my number, try it) and see updates on my poor car’s progress.

Car-repair guys are one of my biggest fears, next to watching the “Saw” movies alone. I assume they all assume I know nothing about cars (they wouldn’t be entirely wrong) and will therefore take advantage of me. Esurance’s little repair-process-voyeurism site doesn’t stop this from happening, certainly, but it does allow me to peek into an area of life I never thought I’d be allowed to see.

What a bizarre sense of comfort I gained from logging in every day and seeing a photo of my Scion, all ripped apart. And Leslie, the wonderful woman at the repair joint, updates it daily with a new photo — even though the car’s been in “waiting for parts” limbo all this week with no apparent fixes made.

I’m pretty happy about the fact that I’ll be able to watch my car go from a sad-looking, jawless contraption to what it looked like when I first bought it.

I’m sorry, Scion. I’ll take better care of you in the future. But for now, I’ll just watch you from my computer while you’re in surgery.
