Grade/subject/school: Fifth grade, Indian Creek Intermediate School, Trafalgar.

Number of years teaching: Five.

Work e-mail: dhowell@nhj.k12.in.us

Background/schooling: Bachelor’s degree in education, Purdue University, 2005; Center Grove High School.

Why did you become a teacher: Initially, I was interested in teaching because I enjoyed being around children. As I reflect over my past five years, I have a new understanding of why I teach. . . . I have discovered I have a passion for children. I want to be the difference in their lives, inspiring them to be their best and always shooting for the moon, regardless of the obstacles life throws at them.

What goals do you have for your students: I not only want to produce successful and hardworking citizens, but I want to instill in each child good morals and values to help to enrich their relationships in this life.

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: I believe that parents are the primary educators of their children, and it is my privilege to come alongside and help. I encourage parents to read, read, read all they can to their child and listen to their child read.

Name your favorite movie: “Christmas Vacation.”

Name your favorite musician or band: Paul Simon.

What’s something your students might not know about you: I have been skydiving in New Zealand. . . . Wooo-hooo! . . . Living life on the edge, for sure.
