Crystal Helt
Grade/subject at what school: Art and art history, Pike High School Freshman Center, Pike Township.
Number of years teaching: Eight.
Work email: cahelt@pike.k12.in.us
Background/schooling: Bachelor’s degree, Ball State University; art magnet, Broad Ripple High School; art magnet, Shortridge Junior High.
Why did you become a teacher: My high school art teacher observed me helping other students with their projects and told me that he thought that I would be a good teacher. Art has been such a large part of my life, sharing it with others has been another opportunity to keep art as a strong influence in my life.
What goals do you have for your students: I want students to leave my room more cultured, well-rounded and with good self-esteem. The arts should be a place for students to explore who they are and how they view the world, and it is my goal to give them a safe environment to do this.
What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: I encourage parents to buy a large sketchbook for their child and have them fill it with drawings. Practice is the best teacher.
Name your favorite movie: I love movies with beautiful special effects and a strong script. Some of my favorites would be “What Dreams May Come,” “Big Fish” and “Pleasantville.”
Name your favorite musician or band: Every time Tori Amos comes to town, I have to see her in concert.
What’s something your students might not know about you: As a child, I had a pony and participated in horse shows.
