Volunteers will bring their gloves and shovels to Pike Township soccer fields on Saturday to plant about 90 trees.

The tree planting will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mary and John Geisse Soccer Complex near 56th Street and Reed Road, just west of the Indianapolis Colts practice facility, said Paula Freund, Indy Parks spokeswoman. Volunteer groups will include the Reed Road Homeowners Association and the Pike Youth Soccer Club.

The trees will come from Kroger. The grocery chain is constructing a store on 86th Street and the Monon Trail. As part of the agreement with the parks department, Kroger is contributing these trees after taking out trees along the pedestrian and biking trail that extends from Downtown to Westfield.

Kroger also planted 46 new trees near the store along the trail, Freund said.

All of the trees were purchased under the supervision of parks department plant specialists.

The 90 trees were originally going to go to the new Riverwood Park, but the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” crew donated trees for that Washington Township park northwest of 71st Street and Keystone Avenue. Parks department officials chose the soccer complex, in anticipation that the trees will provide shade for the young athletes.

To volunteer, arrive at the soccer complex at 9 a.m. Saturday and bring gloves and shovels, parks officials said.
