GREENSBURG, Ind. — State police say officers shot and seriously wounded a man in an exchange of gunfire along a southeastern Indiana highway.

A Greensburg police officer reported spotting a vehicle on Interstate 74 Tuesday night that was thought to have been involved in armed robberies in Batesville and in the Lawrenceburg area.

State police say the driver didn’t stop and then drove on Indiana 3 until stopping about two miles north of Greensburg. Officers then heard and saw gunfire coming from the vehicle and returned fire.

Police say the driver — 27-year-old Dustin Wise of Fortville — was taken by helicopter in critical condition to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

A passenger in the car wasn’t wounded. Police say that person wasn’t involved in the robberies and was released.
