NASCAR Chase hits the West Coast
NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup resumes Sunday (3:15 p.m., WRTV-6) with the fourth of 10 races. This one is at Auto Club Speedway, known to most as California Speedway. A look at how the 12 title contenders stack up:
1. Mark Martin (leader): Interesting turn of events in finishing seventh last week at Kansas. He increased his overall lead but lost ground to six other Chase drivers.
2. Jimmie Johnson (minus-18): Seems odd to finish ninth and call it a bad day, but that’s what the three-time champ did at Kansas. California is arguably his best track (three wins).
3. Juan Pablo Montoya (minus-51): Former Indy 500 winner is gaining confidence by the week. He is the only driver in the Chase with top fives in all three races.
4. Tony Stewart (minus-67): Hoosier looked title-worthy for the first time in this Chase in winning Kansas for his fourth victory of the season. He needs more.
5. Kurt Busch (minus-91): It would seem an average finish of 7.3 would be enough to keep a driver in the title hunt, but Busch barely is.
6. Denny Hamlin (minus-99): Rebounded nicely at Kansas (fifth place) after a tough go at Dover (22nd). Since the Chase began in 2004, this is the largest number of contenders within 100 points of the leader.
7. Jeff Gordon (minus-103): Four-time champ looked strong late in the Kansas race, driving from sixth to second, but he’s going to have to win races to get title No. 5.
8. Greg Biffle (minus-114): He is one of 10 active drivers to have won at California (spring 2005), but Kansas was his best track left and he finished only third.
9. Ryan Newman (minus-164): No matter what anyone says, including him, the Hoosier is out of contention after just three races.
10. Carl Edwards (minus-165): Jimmie Johnson came from this far back in 2006, but Edwards won’t. Kansas was his first top-10 finish since August.
11. Kasey Kahne (minus-190): In this format, a DNF is catastrophic. Finishing sixth and eighth in past two races won’t make up for blown engine in opener.
12. Brian Vickers (minus-250): Blown engine at Kansas. Thanks for playing.
