An IndyGo route to the Eastside will be changed Sunday, but it will not be eliminated.

An October proposal to shut down the 55-English route, which travels along English Avenue from Downtown to Shadeland Avenue and Shortridge Road, was dropped after community petitions and disagreement from members of the City-County Council, said Michael Terry, the bus service’s new president and CEO.

While declining ridership had led to the plan to stop the route, that was changed and now only trips to the International factory will be dropped. That truck engine facility will close. Terry said IndyGo will continue to keep track of the number of riders on the 55-English route.

Also, Route 2 – East 34th Street will no longer go to the military Finance Center or to 25th Street and Post Road. The Finance Center will still be served by Route 4 – Fort Harrison and 25th and Post by the 87 – Eastside Circulator.

The changes were ordered by the bus system’s board to ease budget pressures when expenses and ridership are increasing faster than farebox income. Those fares already have increased from $1.50 to $1.75 for a single ride, from $3.50 to $4 for a day pass and from $55 to $60 for a monthly pass.

IndyGo Commuter Express routes to Carmel and Fishers, funded by those cities and a federal grant, remain successful, Terry said.
