Grade/subject at what school: Eighth grade English, Eastwood Middle School, Washington Township.

Number of years teaching: 10.

Work email: lkixmiller@msdwt .k12.in.us

Background/Schooling: Bachelor’s degree, Indiana State University; master’s degree, Illinois State University; Evansville Harrison High School.

Why did you become a teacher: My high school English teacher, Ms. Leanne Nayden, made Shakespeare “make sense.” She pushed us to write exceptionally; a first draft could always be improved. She was tough but fair. I hope to challenge, motivate and encourage teenagers to be their best.

What goals do you have for your students: I want each student to achieve his or her personal best.

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: Parents need to read with their kids and read to their kids. Then, they need to talk to them about what they have read. Literacy needs to be a priority in every home; at least 20 minutes of uninterrupted time each day should be spent reading.

Name your favorite movie: I have two. “Shakespeare in Love” and “Dead Poets Society.”

Name your favorite musician or band: My iPod is very eclectic. I have everything from Sugarland to Dave Matthews Band and Rihanna to Laurie Berkner Band. It depends if I have my kids with me or I’m running or I need “white noise.”

What’s something your students might not know about you: I was the 1999 Indiana Cherry Blossom Festival Princess complete with a crown and sash.
