Grade/subject/school: Multigrade 2/3 class at Cardinal Elementary School, Brownsburg.
Number of years teaching: Eighth year.

Background/schooling: Bachelor’s of science in elementary education, Indiana University, 2001; license in gifted and talented education, 2006; Speedway High School, 1997. Working toward master’s degree in elementary education from Ball State University.
Why did you become a teacher: I always loved going to school as a student and have always enjoyed working with children. Teaching just came as my natural next step. In addition, I love to have fun! This is a place where every day is different, no matter how regular our routine. I love being surrounded by smiling faces, and the number of hugs I receive in a day is unbelievable!
What goals do you have for your students: I want my students to become creative problem-solvers — to think outside the box! I want them to enjoy thinking, and to enjoy learning, because both are lifelong processes.
What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: The biggest support parents can provide at home is their own interest in their child’s learning. I want parents to be involved. I want them to be “mentors” to their children, and I want them to guide their children toward doing work independently and successfully. When children are treated as independent learners both at home and in the classroom, they will learn to thrive in an independent environment.
Name your favorite movie: “Remember the Titans.”
Name your favorite musician or band: Argh! There are so many! I could never pick!
What’s something your students might not know about you? When I was in third grade, I appeared in a series of commercials on WTTV (Channel 4) with Cowboy Bob and Rainbow the Clown. . . . It’s my only claim to fame!
