Dangerous spending on Allisonville bike lanes
In this age of “unreason” it doesn’t surprise me that a bicycle lane will be installed along heavily traveled Allisonville Road from Binford Boulevard to 82nd Street, a stretch that included the most dangerous intersection in the state, according to The Star a few years ago.
Many more bicyclists are injured and killed than motorists, based on the number of miles traveled.
Where did the city get the money? The U.S. Department of Transportation is paying for 80 percent. Where did The U.S. Department of Transportation get the money? When motorists buy gasoline they think that the federal tax is for roads only. Wrong. The Department of Transportation is funding walking trails, bicycle lanes and other things from this tax.
Where did the city get the 20 percent? A city that can’t pay its bills should have turned down the project and the federal money.
But the bureaucracy and the politicians can’t stand to turn down federal money, even if they have to increase the tax burden locally.
