Carmel High School senior Kyle Killworth’s goal was to continue his wheelchair basketball career in college.

So Killworth began examining the educational opportunities among the small group of colleges that have men’s team. Killworth recently picked the University of Alabama over Missouri.

Killworth, who has a grade point average of 3.91, wants to major in a pre-med or medical research field.

“Alabama had a lot of the majors I was interested in so it allowed me a leniency on what I wanted to do and if I changed majors, it wasn’t going to be difficult,” said Killworth, who had his right leg amputated as a baby.

Killworth earned a 32 on the ACT college entrance exam (36 is a perfect score). Killworth received a full scholarship through a combination of academic and athletic scholarships.

Basketball-wise, it was a solid fit, too.

“Their style of their play is a lot like mine, very fast, very fluid,” Killworth said. “There are not a lot of tall players. But you move quickly and you can adapt to whatever style you need to win to the game. It just seemed like the best fit for me.”

Alabama plays in the intercollegiate division of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. The team will play adult teams in the area and enter some college tournaments.

Killworth plays for the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Pacers, which will open their season this weekend. He is also helping to start a RHI Pacers team for high school-aged players. That team will start play in December.
