2 Indy violinists to be in world contest here
Two violinists with Indianapolis roots are among the 40 participants selected for the eighth quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.
Robin Scott, 24, and Eric Silberger, 21, grew up in Indianapolis and have appeared as featured soloists with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Silberger’s father, Marc, was a member of the ISO’s first violin section from 1987 to 2008.
Scott’s honors include the second prize in the 2006 Yehudi Menuhin Competition in France. Last season, he was a featured soloist with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra.
Scott’s father, Beverly, is assistant principal violist with the ISO, where he’s played since 1981. The violinist’s mother, Sylvia Patterson Scott, frequently performs with the ISO when a symphonic work includes a piano part.
Silberger and Scott are among 16 Americans invited to the contest here, which opens Sept. 26. Ranging in age from 17 to 29, violinists are competing for $250,000 in prizes, international concert engagements and the use of the 1684 “ex-Gingold” Stradivarius.
The top winner receives a gold medal, $30,000, a recital debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City and the opportunity to record a CD on the Naxos label.
Twenty-two women and 18 men representing 12 countries were selected. A screening committee headed by jury president Jaime Laredo viewed DVDs of applicants playing a required repertoire. More than 160 violinists applied.
