3 men, youth accused of robbing boy at home; fleeing suspect stole 2nd boy’s bike, police say

Four males accused of robbing a 13-year-old in his home were arrested Monday after a car chase and crash on I-465 on the Northwestside.

One of the suspects tried to get away by stealing a bicycle from a 9-year-old at gunpoint, police said.

Damon Swift, 20; Daron Croom, 18; John Easley, 20; and a 17-year-old juvenile were held on preliminary charges of robbery and burglary, said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Sgt. Paul Thompson.

The pursuit began after officers responded to a home invasion robbery at 2:21 p.m. in the 6000 block of Ruskin Place West, near 38th Street and High School Road. A 13-year-old boy had reported his home was being robbed.

When officers arrived, they saw a blue sport utility vehicle with four people inside speeding away.

Two detectives from the IMPD violent crime unit, Sgt. Garth Schwomeyer and Detective Jean Deddish, saw the vehicle and followed it as it turned onto I-465 northbound.

The detectives kept the vehicle in sight until uniformed officers in marked patrol cars took over, Thompson said. The suspects’ vehicle sped away as police tried to pull it over.

The chase continued north on I-465 to 71st Street, where the suspects got off the highway and drove through several neighborhoods, Thompson said. The suspects’ car later got back onto I-465 southbound, where it crashed just south of I-74, he said.

Three of the suspects were caught immediately, but a fourth got away. That suspect pointed a gun at a 9-year-old boy and stole his bicycle in the 2000 block of Parson Drive, Thompson said. He was arrested a short time later.

Police recovered the bicycle, but the boy could not positively identify the suspect who robbed him, Thompson said. Without identification, Thompson said it is unlikely that anyone will be charged with that crime.

Thompson said the case remains under investigation.
