North Central HS student 8th in world climbing contest
North Central sophomore Marissa Stephens finished eighth in her speed climbing division in the International Federation of Sport Climbing World Youth Championships at Valence, France.
The four-day competition concluded Sunday.
Stephens competed in the Youth B Female (born in 1994-95) class.
Stephens was joined by Indy Flash climbing teammates Kate Carr and Nathan Hadley, both of Carmel.
Carr, a Carmel High School senior, placed 19th in the Junior Female (born in 1990-91) class in difficulty climbing division.
“More than half the U.S. team got cut before semis so we were extremely proud of her accomplishments,” her father Phil Carr said in an e-mail.
Hadley, a Heritage Christian High School junior who was a national champion in July, did not advance from the speed qualifiers in the Youth A Male (born in 1992-93) because of a fall on the qualifying routes which disqualified him. Phil Carr said.
Hadley had posted the fastest time of any U.S. team member on his first qualifying route. Hadley finished in a tie for 40th.
There were more than 500 competitors from 39 countries in the tournament.
