The Carmel City Council may consider increasing parking restrictions in the city at tonight’s council meeting.

Councilman Rick Sharp is hoping to get enough votes to add on an ordinance during the meeting that would prohibit parking on roundabouts, or within 30 feet of a roundabout entrance.

The ordinance also wouldn’t allow parking within 30 feet of any crosswalk or designated pedestrian crossing.

The current law restricts parking up to 20 feet, and the proposed ordinance, sponsored by Sharp, says that distance is insufficient.

Since the ordinance wasn’t included in the original agenda for the meeting, council members must vote to allow it to be added on Monday, before the council can vote on the actual parking restrictions.

In a letter included with the proposed ordinance, Sharp wrote: “I am proposing to add this ordinance to our agenda as (its) purpose is very important to maintaining the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Carmel and any further delay would be injurious to them.”

The council meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 1 Civic Square.
